What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the
Hallmark of
the Most Successful People in the World

Just as we all have a capacity for knowledge and
intellectual understanding (IQ), we also each have an innate
capacity for experiencing, responding to and making wise use
of our emotional resources. This second ability is
referred to as EQ, or Emotional Intelligence.
Those of you who've attended Leadership Awakening have
had a taste of how powerful EQ can be. By harnessing your
passion, you were able to accomplish things that you might
have previously imagined were impossible for you. But the
deeper understanding the importance of EQ goes much further
than that.
Why do we say that it is a hallmark of the most
successful people in the world? It's simply because
Emotional Intelligence has proven a better predictor of
future success than traditional methods like the GPA, IQ,
and standardized test scores. When we are aware of the
emotional impact and the consequences of our thoughts, words and
deeds, all of our decisions are clearer and more powerful.
In a sense, EQ is about learning how to learn at a deeper
level.
Another core element of EQ is our ability to understand
one another. As Empower U's CEO, Scott V. Black is fond of
saying, "If I can understand you a little better and you can
understand me a little better, doesn't it make sense that we
will have a better relationship?" Without this
understanding, communication is all but impossible. Without communication nothing worthwhile gets done in
business or in life.
What are examples of EQ?
EQ can show up in many ways. It might be something as
simple as calling a person by their name,
smiling, looking them in the eye, giving warm compliments,
listening with attentiveness, etc. On the other hand, it
also manifests in the vision of great leaders who include
the deeper needs of employees, customers and fellow
executives in their strategic and long-term planning.
Obviously, such outstanding leaders have developed the
ability to perceive and respond to these deeper needs.

understand exactly how deeply your level of Emotional
Intelligence affects every important part of your life? Do you think you might be
able to be more effective in your relationships

People who
possess Emotional Intelligence at a high level are
healthier, less depressed, more productive at work, and have
better relationships. If you pay attention to your responses
and the responses of others in your communications, you will
quickly see when you are moving towards the outcomes you
desire and when you are not.
Today's action step is a
very good basic EQ exercise. Choose one particular
interaction today and pay attention to the responses of the
person you are talking with. Notice when the
communication is going differently than you'd prefer and
take the initiative to change something about the way you
are communicating.
You might
change posture, tone of voice, speed of speaking or a
similar, but relatively subtle aspect of what you are
saying. Notice how the other person responds to the change
and if it's positive keep communicating that way. If not,
keep experimenting until you see a positive shift.

Making a
Difference - Rob Sredl, Team 392 |
Gus and I started our volunteer work this week at the St.
Vincent's Food Pantry. The first thing I did was pick up
a volunteer application last week. This had a strong
impact on me since I was in the same line as the people
needing food. It was a humbling experience because it
made me think about my present situation and how
grateful I am to be in it. Yes, I'm still looking for a
job but we live in a nice house and I'm still paying the
mortgage and buying food. The folks requiring these
services have much more difficult circumstances to
overcome than me.
When we arrived yesterday, we met the Manager of the
pantry. She said something that struck me again. She
told us that most of the people who work at the pantry
were one step away from being on the other side of the
counter. Again, that comment got me thinking about my
situation and how I have a long way to go to be in such
dire straits. After today, my grateful list just got a
lot easier to do! |

Vision is everything for a leader. (Leaders under
construction). It is utterly indispensable. Why? Because
vision leads the leaders. It paints the targets, sparks and
