"For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life.
And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future."

From the Heart of Mr. Black by Scott V. Black

Looking Forward

I love this time of the year. In the beginning of October, I celebrate my birthday. Then we go into Halloween, which is not the most “Christian” of holidays, yet I like that the kids get so excited. Then we have Thanksgiving and football. Christmas shopping and the music of carolers, and jingle bells. Fireplaces and coats that allow for a nip in the air to open the eyes and flare the nostrils and smell the pumpkin spice. Aaaahhh… the 4th quarter, the end of the year… Christmas… The New Year… the holidays.

I was thinking about what was special about this time of year and it hit me… Looking Forward. I was talking with my best friend Brett and he said, “Scott, you have to look forward to this situation being behind you. Look forward that you will bring this bad part of your life to a close… look forward.” As I was processing his comments, or commands – not sure which – it struck me: I like this time of the year, because I “Look Forward” to so many things.

I look forward to the family and friends. I look forward to an excuse to give to those I love and care about. I look forward to the days off from work and the time to relax with my three blessings from God. I look forward to relaxing and some of the diminished stress to “pay the bills.” I look forward to slowing down and considering what really matters in life; God, Family, Relationships… Joy… .But most importantly… I “Look Forward.”

But Not Always...

I have been wallowing lately. You probably know wallowing – it's like floundering. We all know what it feels like at least sometimes. It is like being in “Emotional Quick Sand.” I have been wallowing in the pain of being used and abused by someone that I thought was in love with me. And I have been really struggling with processing through the experience in the healthiest way possible. I know all the things to do, so why won’t I let go and move on? Why do I feel the need to hurt and be righteously indignant? It doesn’t benefit me… .

Now I am sure that nobody else out there reading this article has ever experienced this before. I am sure you have never been wronged by someone, never been emotionally used, never made the biggest mistake of your life and continue to beat yourself up over it… I am sure you have no idea what I am talking about. However, you might want to still read along. I think you will still gain, even though you might not have any real life experience in this type of situation...

Action Plan for Today - Setting Yourself Up to Break Free

As Scott mentions in today's article, we all get mired in the past at some point or another. Even though this seems unavoidable, when it does happen there are steps to take for breaking free and refocusing on the future we're creating right now.

Your action plan for today is to strongly reinforce the future goals you have set for yourself every day. Why is this important? Because when you do find yourself getting stuck, those goals can serve as anchors to pull you out of that stuck state and help move you forward into a better future.

It's also important because when you do get stuck, you're usually in less of a position to start thinking about the positive future you want to create for yourself. If you've spent the time ahead of time making a rich, three-dimensional picture of your goals, it will be much easier to break free and refocus on them.

Making a Difference: Laurie Grubb, Team 356

My parents had a chance to spend time this weekend with a guy that I went to high school with. He was a star football player, prom king and everybody liked him. He traveled all over the world playing rugby in college and got a great job in New York City after graduation. He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease) at age 26 and will probably not live to see age 30. He now can't walk by himself and his speech is starting to slur. It is hard for me to realize such a big, gorgeous and healthy guy is staring death, and a very sad and wasting death, straight in the face. He got married last year and he and his wife traveled the world and are spending as much time together and experiencing as much as they can before he is reduced to a wheelchair and breathing and feeding tubes.

Oh, by the way, one morning he was running late to work. He was almost to his office at the World Trade Center when a plane flew into it - you may have heard about it in the news. He knows only too well that planes crash and people die. Within six months of surviving 9/11 he was diagnosed with a fatal disease.

Use your time here on earth for something good. When you are about to do something, think to yourself "If I died right now, is this the last thing that I would want to be doing... is this the last person that I would want to be talking to?" If the answer is No, move on to something that makes you proud of who you are. Can you IMAGINE what you are capable of? When you live your life like it matters, it does.
