What Are You Talking About?

By Scott V. Black

Have you ever had someone say that to you? What are you talking about?

Right now I want you to ask yourself this question. If you need a mirror, look in a mirror and ask that “you” this question, “What are you talking about?” So much of what happens in our lives has to do with just that. It really is not what happens to us that make us feel anything. What makes us feel happy, sad, angry, and bitter, confused, is not what happens to us, but how we explain it to ourselves. The old saying is “It is not what happens to us that makes us who we are, it is how we deal with it.” To a degree it is really how we “explain it to ourselves.”

In our closing circles in Leadership Awakening, we stand up and put our arms around each other, some nice music is playing. I will look around the circle and tell everybody to look at the faces of their classmates, or teammates, depending on the point in the training. I will usually say some profound words that are designed to drive people inside to be introspective and reflective. I will then ask the question, “Who would like to share what they are feeling NOW?” All kinds of interesting comments are shared, again, depending on where we are in the process. One of the most interesting closing circles is the one that happens at the end of module 3.

Commitment To Making A Difference - Tom Balbierz

Friends and Family-

Did you know that cancer is the #1 disease killer of children – more than AIDS, asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and congenital anomalies combined? Fifty years ago, childhood cancer was almost always fatal. Due to advances in diagnosis and treatment, today over three-quarters of children survive, but some types of cancer remain very difficult to cure.

That’s where the St. Baldrick’s Foundation comes in. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation supports cancer research by raising awareness and funds at head shaving events around the world. For several years, Wood Rodgers (my employer) has participated in their annual fund raisers… both in the form of donations and volunteers who put their “locks” on the line to raise money. Well guess what, it’s my turn. I am choosing to

SHAVE MY HEAD

this year with the intent of raising funds far beyond what I could donate myself. If you haven’t picked up on it yet, that’s where you come in. How many of you have had a friend or family member who has suffered from cancer. If you haven’t, you’re in the minority and count yourself as blessed. What would you do for them? Anything and everything I’m sure. Well, here is an opportunity to be proactive in taking steps towards curing kid’s cancer in our lifetime. Why must we wait until someone we know is stricken with the disease before we “circle the wagons” and do something. THE TIME IS NOW!

So I am asking you to go to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation website (www.StBaldricks.org) and check it out. If you’re able, please donate and make the difference for a child with cancer. If you choose to sponsor me, you can get to my page by clicking on the following link:

http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/shavee_info.html?ShaveeID=722#

If it is not in your means to donate at this time, prayers are always welcome. If you feel compelled to forward this to others that are not on the list, but might be willing to help me help others – please do. Thank you for taking the time to read through this email. I hope it finds you all healthy and happy. Remember, it is a great day to be alive!

Achieve More By Holding Yourself More Accountable

Why?

For 2 reasons:

  1. It helps you be more accountable when you share your mission statement with others.

  2. It inspires others to re-visit their mission statement more regularly.

In other words, it's a win-win situation for everyone. So help yourself and help all of your fellow graduates by sending in your mission statement. Just click here to send it.

Live It: Brent Ledesma, Team 486

One way that graduates make the best use of their Empower U training is to figure out how they can integrate it into their lives every day. Brent Ledesma of Team 486 did just that.

After class he took the initiative to create a simple, one-page form on which to do his 5 X 5 practice. And, he went one better by adding a short section to write down one thing to do, one action to take today to move closer to his mission.

We liked the form so much that we asked him if we could share it with other graduates. He graciously agreed.

So, if you'd like a convenient, pre-made form that you can easily print and use for your 5 X 5 (X1) journaling, all you need to do is click here to download it in Adobe Acrobat form (PDF).

You'll need the free Acrobat Reader to open and print it. Most computers have this, but in case you don't, you can get the reader here.
