What Walls?

By Scott V. Black

One of the things I enjoy about doing these articles for the newsletter is that it keeps me digging a little deeper. It keeps my RAS (Reticular Activating System) focused on learning’s and inspiration in everything I do and experience. I am naturally programmed that way, anyway, so it helps me do what I do. I become more aware of what I am learning from my experience of Being a Leader Under Construction.

I have been doing a lot of change work at the deep structural level over the last few months. Marrying someone I should have never been with and then fixing it through a greedy, nasty divorce caused me to want to find out… “How could I have been so stupid? What patterns are in place that caused me to create such a mess.” In the process, I have been working on some things that for years didn’t seem to be too big of a deal. However, with things that have happened in my personal life over the last 5 years, some of those things have shown themselves to be a much bigger deal. I have taken about a year to beat myself up over some poor choices that I have made over the last 3 years. So in an effort to move beyond the 3 R’s of survival; Regret, resent and resist, I thought it was time to destroy some walls.

I went to pull a proverbial “rabbit” out of my hat, but found out it was a lion...

We're looking for Graduates who are ready to make a difference in the lives of others. You can help two ways:

  1. Sign up to staff an upcoming Leadership Awakening or Leadership Adventure class. It costs you nothing but your time and makes a huge difference - not only for the class you staff, but also for you!
  2. Sponsor someone you care about. It's easy to do and you can make payments. It's a great way to make a difference in the life of someone you love.

Call the office at (775) 575-2298 or email us to get started.

Also note that we've added another Iowa Awakening class August 9-11. Check the schedule. The Leadership Adventure schedule now extends through the end of the year.

Forum Buzz... by Mindy Colvin

I recently joined an on-line forum made up almost exclusively of mothers. There are women from all over the world who use that forum regularly, sometimes several times a DAY. They have conversations. They share experiences. They support and encourage one another. And although many (if not most) of these women have never met face to face, several of them have been members for YEARS, and they’ve become dear, dear friends. They have formed a community. After joining, I found myself checking in regularly, looking for updates, adding my opinions and insights, building my “fancy” signature line and custom avatar…I became part of the community!

I started thinking about another forum that I’ve been a member of for more than 5 years, but unfortunately, this one hasn’t been used as much, either by me or by other members who have appeared and (sadly!) disappeared over the years. I’m talking about our Empower U Forum.

I’ve taken it upon myself to start changing things, and I invite you to join me! Under the “Empowered Teams Unite!” Forum, you’ll find new and ever-updating conversations that I’d love for YOU to participate in! The goal is to create that same kind of COMMUNITY – a place where people with common experiences can share with each other and find support and encouragement. UP UNTIL NOW… most people have stayed close to their own “Team” forum. However, you were told when you graduated that you are now part of a much larger TEAM – the Empower U Leadership Team. So that’s what we have begun to create at the Empowered Teams Unite forum. Empowered people sharing lives and thoughts and experiences.

There are literally millions of forums on the web, most of which are specifically geared toward the common interests of the members. Thus, through the forum, a community is formed. Our dream is to change OUR forum to create that same environment for Empower U grads! We’d love for every one of you to join us!! Come join our community on the “Unite” forum, and let’s continue to make a difference in EACH OTHER’S lives!!

Here’s the latest conversation starter… Where is your “meadow”? Is it an actual place or something you created in the moment?

Come and share with us – we’re looking forward to seeing you on the net!

P.S. - If you didn't notice the links on the forum name above, you can click here to go straight to the Empowered Teams Unite forum. To post you'll need to have an account on the forum. It's fr.ee - just click on the "Register" link near the top of any forum page.

Achieve More By Holding Yourself Even More Accountable

You can take your own accountability to live your dreams up a notch by sharing your goals with others. To help you do this we'd like you to send us a copy of your mission statement. We'd also like your permission to include it in this newsletter.

Why?

For 2 reasons:

  1. It helps you be more accountable when you share your mission statement with others.

  2. It inspires others to re-visit their mission statement more regularly.

In other words, it's a win-win situation for everyone. So step over the line to help yourself and help all of your fellow graduates by sending in your mission statement. Just click here to send it.

Making A Difference - Sande Monagan, Team 482

Sometimes, the simplest of tasks can appear to be overwhelming to some, and to others, deeply thought-provoking!

So, my task relative to this assignment continues on a daily basis and in the early morning hours.

For reference purposes, I am monthly blood donor, a frequent visitor to nursing homes, feeding the less fortunate, a tutor of the poorest of children in our area, and an active Rotarian. So, since I am active on the community level, I had to come up with something that I could do daily and that would make me realize just how totally fortunate and grateful I am.

I purposefully drive to work on a route that will take me past two facilities that feed, clothe and care for the homeless. These folks are mostly on bikes, clothed in hand-me-down, donated, worn clothing, look and probably are hungry, desperate, alone, sad, cold, and some are clearly hopeless; you can see it in their eyes and literally feel it in their body language as you pass.

I have worked in both facilities serving breakfast and have donated clothes and other toiletries that they might need. But I have, in the past, made an effort to avoid driving by to really experience the pain and suffering I am certain most are experiencing. NOW, I drive by each day, and I look at them with compassion, a sense of fear, I must admit, but most of all, a newly found deep feeling of human bonding.

And I am playing, as I drive by, the EMPOWER U tape and wish in my heart, body and soul, that each of these people could experience what I did in 48 short hours.

Thank you Team # LDR-482, Mr. Black, my Sponsor and most of all God for allowing me the opportunity to fully realize how fortunate I am and how the human predicament binds us all together, if we permit it do so.
