Do You Believe?
By Scott V. Black
Hola Señors and Señoritas…
I am actually North of the border at home in Mansfield, Texas. Life is good and
getting better in the world of Mr. Black. God is great, and life is good and
things are making sense. I am no where close to where I want to be, BUT, I am
getting closer by the day. “It is a great day to be alive” says this Leader
Under Construction!
Last week I had a great class in Sacramento. Team 498 started as 21 self focused
individuals and ended up being a team of 20 unique individuals who were all
committed to living their life like it matters. It was, like all Leadership
Awakenings, ”What a ride!”
During that class I had to ask someone to leave the
class. It is that process that brought me and my fingers into this article. You
see, our individual who had to leave… she did not believe. That doesn’t make her
evil, or bad, she just couldn’t get beyond her “reality.” We can all learn a lot
from the actions of others. So today I want to peruse the crevices of your mind
and ask you some questions. Do you believe? What is it that you believe? Does it
matter… what you believe?
So today I want you to understand your beliefs and the power they have on you.
Do you believe? Do you dare know what you believe? Do you know how important it
is to know… what you believe? Are your beliefs that important? In other
words… Does it Matter… what you believe? What effect do my beliefs have on my
life?
Our former class member of Class 498 didn’t believe it was
possible…

Follow Through
How’s your follow through? (And how many of you think
I’m talking about your golf swing?!) One of my
favorite things about the Empower U Forum is the
opportunity it gives me to be very public in my failure
to follow through!! Now, while that might sound a bit
odd, hear me out for a moment. You see, I can be a
pretty good “performer”. I have a bit of theatrical
experience in my past, I’ve done lots of singing, both
in group and solo capacities, and I know all the things
to say to give the people around me the impression that
I’m doing what I say I’m doing. Except that I’m really…
NOT. I’ve set all sorts of goals throughout my life.
And although I know all about taking action, GETTING
(not just setting!) goals, and focus and commitment and
all that, I STILL manage to NOT achieve many if not most
of my goals. And up until I started posting some goals
on the Forum, I was the only one who knew just how far
short I fall… again and again and again!! I bring this
up because we’re at the beginning of a new month, which
means a couple of things for those of us who’ve posted
our July goals on the Forum. First of all, it means that
we get to (if we choose to!) recap our month and be 100%
honest about what we did and didn’t do! And then (and
here’s where it’s really exciting!!) we get to PICK
OURSELVES UP…DUST OURSELVES OFF…AND HIT IT AGAIN!! I
posted three goals for June and missed 100% of them. So
then I posted 7 goals for July! My results? Well, you’ll
have to visit to find out!! I will say that it’s a good
thing I’m UNDER CONSTRUCTION!! It’s really not a lot
of fun to let the public in on the reality behind the
“I’ve got it all together” façade. But ultimately it’s
VERY good for me, because it gives me more motivation to
be able to FINALLY report my success to those who are in
the battle with me. And when I’m at last able to report
the results that I truly desire to report, I’ll get to
celebrate in public, too. And that will be worth it!!
Go public with your August goals!! We’ll see you at The
Forum!! |

Making a Difference: "Hearts and Hammers" by Carol Taber, Team 487 |
|
I live on Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound of Washington
State. Whidbey is a rural community and many here live on
small parcels of land. Each year, a not-for-profit
organization called Hearts & Hammers assists the elderly
and/or low-income families with maintenance of their homes.
All materials and labor are donated and volunteers bring
their own tools (trucks, power washers, tractors, chain
saws, weed eaters, etc.). This year, 480 people showed up to
help their neighbors, and were split up into 50 teams (each
team ranging from 5-35 people depending on the job).
The weekend before the event, Bill and I received a call
asking if we could assist with some pre-work, removing a
shake roof. We arrived at the home of the Hilberts—Leighton
is 86 and his wife is 80 — who have been married for 66
years. Leighton had grown up in the Dakotas, adjacent to an
Indian reservation, and was fascinated by the functionality
of teepees as a home. About 55 years ago, when he arrived on
Whidbey, Leighton built a wooden teepee, approximately 35
feet tall—the inside made of beautiful yellow cedar. They
gave us a tour, and Leighton showed us his hand carved birds
(a huge eagle, a resting loon, a diving hawk). We worked the
morning, climbing extension ladders, pulling off cedar
shakes, extracting nails, and cleaning up the yard. During
rest breaks, I chatted with Leighton. After he built the
teepee, he purchased 40 acres on a small island off the
rugged west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. He built a
log home there, hauling the logs from Whidbey Island. His
dream was that his log home would be passed on from
generation to generation. Today, Leighton’s grandson and his
great grandchildren reside there and Leighton and his wife
visit often.
Hearts & Hammers started at 7:30 a.m. on May 5th at South
Whidbey High School. We at breakfast, met our teammates, and
headed to our assigned address. Barbara, the homeowner,
needed help with her yard and some minor repairs to her
home. At 80 years of age, she was unable to tackle her 1
acre yard as she was also caring for her 103 year-old
mother, Gertrude (who’s sharp as a tack!). They repeatedly
thanked us for our assistance.
With three folks on weed eater duty and me on the lawn
tractor, it took four hours to cut through the rye grass
that had taken over her front yard. The rest of the team
focused on clearing paths, laying cedar chips, cleaning
garden beds, and pruning trees and shrubs.
Before we knew it, it was noon. Barbara and Gertrude,
originally from Alabama, made us lunch. Although we were
covered in grass, dirt and mulch, they welcomed us to a
beautifully laid table, complete with linen table cloth and
china, and Barbara sang grace. Lunch was a feast, consisting
of southern fried chicken, home-made garlic pickles,
vegetables, and fresh baked bread, pecan and strawberry
pies. (In previous years, Barbara and Gertrude baked 50 pies
for the Hearts & Hammers dinner. It seemed so right they
should be recipients now!)
After lunch, we tackled the back yard, cleaned gutters,
stained the deck, repainted outdoor tables, and caulked
windows and doors. The day ended around 4:30 p.m., and
Barbara and Gertrude hugged each one of us goodbye.
I learned so much from these remarkable people: Leighton,
Barbara and Gertrude. From Leighton, I learned about focus.
Each of his birds had individually carved feathers that
looked soft and real. I also learned about having a vision
and staying committed. His dream of a home for generations
of his family was realized.
From Barbara and Gertrude, I learned that givers gain.
Their unselfish contributions to Hearts & Hammers were
returned to them in the form of new friends and helping
hands when they needed them.
I learned more about giving 100% and stepping over the
line — even when my back was sore from shoveling mulch, I
kept moving forward and loved every minute of it! |
