EQ: Communicating with Power

EQ: Communicating with Power is a class that teaches you to effectively use the two types of communication that take place in our lives. Because communication is the foundation for all relationships both in our personal and professional lives, your effectiveness is directly related to your communication skills.

Communication establishes connection and connection forges relationships. When we enhance our communications we enhance our relationships. The first type of communication that this class deals with is the communication that we have with another person. Virtually all surveys given to senior executives to determine which business skill is most important reveal that communication is the number one skill. You simply cannot be persuasive, manage well, lead others, effectively participate in teams or build strong relationships when you can't communicate effectively.

The second type of Communication this class deals with is the communication that we have with ourselves. This is the personal dialogue that goes on inside of us on an ongoing basis. This communication is the basis for how we see most things in life, how we view what we do and what others do to us. This really is the most important form of communication.

This class deals with Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). NLP is the science of communication. We all process information primarily in one of three ways. We either process visually, by sight or seeing; Auditory, by hearing; or kinesthetically, by experiencing or emotionally. In EQ we will identify the three modalities and discover how each one works and how to identify each type in others and specifically how we process information. This will allow us to understand others and ourselves better.

We will also be exploring behavior and how our behavior can be categorized across four primary dimensions: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Conscientiousness. The foundation for personal and professional success lies in understanding self, understanding others and realizing the impact of personal behavior on the people around you. The tools that we use are based on research done over the last 70 years by Dr. William Marston and continued by many others. The personal profile system that we use has unlocked the door to productive communication and relationships for over 30 million people worldwide.

We wrap this in a foundation of Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is the intelligent use of emotions. To intentionally make your emotions work for you by using them to help guide your behavior and thinking in ways that enhance results. Our emotions can give us valuable information about ourselves, others, and situations. By learning to tune into this information- our feelings, senses, appraisals, actions and intentions- This allows us to guide our behavior and thinking in ways that will enhance results, communicate more effectively, better solve problems, resolve conflicts and become more self-motivated.
